Saturday 2nd October

The weather continued to be fairly dire this morning, with occasional heavy rain showers. But it did brighten up a bit in the afternoon, coaxing at least two of us to go out..

Gary had been at the top of Loch Indaal this afternoon when it was high tide and counted 35 or more Brent Geese and a roost of 60 Curlew and 42 Bar-tailed Godwits.

I was over at Loch Skerrols a little later where there was a lot of activity from in excess of 600 Greylag Geese flighting into and over the loch. With them came a single Whooper Swan and 4 Barnacle Geese. Also on the loch were 32 Wigeon, 41 Teal, 4 Tufted Duck, 12 Mallard, 8 Mute Swans and a Moorhen. A little later, on the way home, I called in to Blackrock where 42 Shags were perched. In the sea around them were 35 Common Scoter and 3 Scaup. More unusual was an adult Arctic Tern still in full summer plumage. It was perched on the rocks for a long while before flying off south.

Margaret reports a Golden Eagle over at Kilchoman.
