Thursday 27th August

Yesterday, Paul Robinson had been over at the reserve at Gruinart where he counted 24 Blackwits, 2 Ruff and he also had a flock of around 100 Lapwing. This morning, Mary on the guided walk at Gruinart had a Chough at the end of woodland trail, out on Loch Gruinart, an Osprey was seen, as well as large flocks of Redshank and Dunlins with smaller groups of Knot and Blackwits present. Plenty of Greylags were seen with Meadow Pipits, Skylarks and Linnets also around. Closer to the hides, 70 Lapwings were up in the air while out on the salt marsh, 10 Ravens were noted. A mixed day with dirty showers in the mix...

What on Earth is a 'Blackwit'? Is it related to that rare accidental migrant the 'Halfwit'?
