Friday 27th October

Intermittent short, sunny spells between grey and light rain.

Mark Cockburn sent in a late entry for yesterday of a female Blackcap on the north shore of Loch Ballygrant. Today he noted two Arctic Terns at Port Charlotte (also reported by Val Peacock).

Lots of other activity across the island today with a late Wheatear seen by Ed Burrell at Cornabus along with a somewhat out of habitat Great Spotted Woodpecker and his first Woodcock of the winter.  Steve Percival noted a Golden Eagle at Sanaig and Seamus Breen observed a White-tailed Eagle hunting the geese at Kilchoman.

Steve Ward provided some interesting records from various locations across the island, starting with a Red Kite consorting with a Buzzard at Tallant. Later he was over at Cornabus seeing the female American Wigeon again along with a Merlin and no less than 4 White-tailed Eagles. By the afternoon he was up at Port Askaig scoring our first Waxwing of the winter, plus 4 more White-tailed Eagles over Jura and c.60 shags sat on the nearby cliffs.

This evening James How reported from RSPB Gruinart where there were 5 Ruff, 18 Brent Geese, single White-tailed Eagle (10 or more birds today across Islay?), Jack Snipe and Carrion Crow. The high tide had pushed up good numbers of waders including 385 Bar-tailed Godwits, 90 Redshank, 305 Lapwing, 2 Grey Plover, single Greenshank and an ever-increasing total of 8 Little Egrets.

Below are some more photos taken by Neil McMahon during his recent tour of Islay.
