Friday 12th October

Back here to the dry weather today, the wet weather has moved over to the mainland instead, the images seen on the news this evening were not too nice to see. This morning we had a ringtail Hen Harrier close beside us along the road at Rockside.  Wally and Jude had a flock of 74 Golden Plovers at Ballinaby this afternoon, later on  up at Ardnave they counted 55 Chough, but this was topped by other visitors, Dave and Lesley who had a whopping 77 Chough in all. Mary had been up at Ardnave earlier this morning, with 8 Golden Plover close to the farm steading itself, two separate flocks of 25 - 30 Twite, a pair of Ravens, an adult Golden Eagle over close the old lobster ponds, a Merlin near to the loch. Over on Nave Island, Mary counted 36 Shag, 32 Eider, pr of Ringed Plover, 108 Grey seal pups, only a few of them have lost their fluffy white coats so far! Later on, while Mary was "path building" on the reserve, a Mistle Thrush was busy tucking into the rowan berries and 3 Skylark flew over. Coming home from Gruinart late this afternoon, we had a Merlin shoot across the road directly in front of us. Along the road at Aruadh, the roof of the cottage was covered with Starlings. Wally was commenting to me earlier that he feels that he has seen more charms of Goldfinches over on Islay this visit.
